“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”
2 Chronicles 7:14 NLT
“"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
Matthew 7:7-8 NASB
A few weeks ago I shared with you the great need that we have to start praying for our country and it's leadership. In fact it is actually a command that God gives us (1 Tim 2:1-4). I find being told that I need to pray for something like this often leaves me with the question of what exactly to I pray though. So over the next few days we are going to go over a few things that we can pray for, our country, it's leadership, our military, and our families. Today we are going to start with what should we pray over the leadership governing our country. Even if you don't agree with whomever it is that is leading this government, still you need to pray. In fact it is needed especially if you see something that you think is out of order and wrong. The heart and actions of any leader can radically change when God is given permission to move. And we give God permission through our prayers. So what do we pray:
First and foremost is salvation and a greater knowledge of Christ. It's God's desire that all men should be saved. The Bible tells us that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks and acts (Luke 6:45). So if the heart of the the leader knows Christ then good will inevitably flow from them to those they govern.
Secondly is protection for them and their families (1Tim 2:2)
Third that they be surrounded by godly, wise counsel and that he would be quick to hear it. (Prov 12:15, James 1:19
“Teach me how to live, O LORD. Lead me along the right path, for my enemies are waiting for me.”
Psalms 27:11 NLT
Lastly that he would walk in Godly wisdom (James 1:5)
I know I didn't give you many things to pray for but this is just the beginning. As you sit down to pray, ask if God has anything else to add to this. He will if you'll ask him too! If you want even more information on why we need to pray for our leaders and how this article by Franklin Graham is a good read. Also here is a specific prayer that has already been written out if you'd prefer to use it. In my next post we will discuss what to pray for our country.
